The Myth Behind High SPFs

Do we really know how to protect our skin?

So granted, Summer 2019 has been a bit of a washout but it’s important to really understand the need to protect yourself and your skin by using an SPF. And don’t be tricked into thinking the higher the SPF, the safer you are!

SPFs have never been higher, but neither has the rate of skin cancer. According to Cancer Research UK, over 15,400 people develop malignant melanoma each year, compared with around 1,800 in the mid-1970s. SPFs are now available in excess of 60, so why aren’t they protecting us?

Sunscreen products – saviours or sinners?

Despite using very high SPFs, the numbering system can be misleading. It’s logical to assume that SPF30 provides twice the protection of SPF 15, but it only blocks 4% more rays (SPF 15 blocks 93%) and contains a much greater level of potentially harmful chemicals. High SPFs give a false sense of security, which means people reapply them less frequently and spend longer in the sun. Another contributing factor to the rise of skin cancer is that people don’t apply enough, particularly if the SPF is high. The advice is to cover the skin in a ‘shot and a half’ but in a study published by the journal JAMA Dermatology, only 55% correctly identified the amount required.

Free radical damage

Research has shown that high SPFs can be harmful when left on the skin*.Chemical sunscreens are only effective for two-three hours after application. They absorb UV rays during this time, but once they stop working they turn into free radicals which react with DNA cells, increasing the visible signs of ageing and the risk of skin cancer. It’s therefore important to keep reapplying regularly.

“Scientists do not recommend anything stronger than SPF 15-20 because there is minimal advantage from the higher SPFs….stronger creams contain greater concentrations of sunscreen agents which themselves can be converted into free radicals by exposure to UV rays” says Dr Des Fernandes, founder of Environ. It’s important to remember that SPF only indicates protection from UVB rays, which cause burning, and not UVA which cause photo-ageing so using a broad spectrum cream which protects against both is key.

A second line of defence

If you want to achieve superior protection against the sun, antioxidants need to be incorporated into their skincare regime. They mop up free radicals generated in the skin from UV exposure, minimising the damaging effects they have on DNA. You should consider applying an antioxidant sunscreen such as RAD from Environ®. Daily use is essential. Studies indicate that even on cloudy days 80% of radiation from UVA rays breaks through.  Environ’s RAD is the first antioxidant sunscreen in the world, formulated with a combination of antioxidant vitamins, reflectant and low chemical sunscreens. Safe, superior sun protection for all ages, even babies.

Powerful protection boost

Given its impeccable skin nourishing credentials, it’s no surprise that vitamin A helps defend against UV damage. “The most powerful sun-protective molecule is the retinyl palmitate form of vitamin A, which in adequate doses, can have a photo-protective effect of SPF20 and gives additional protection against UVA”, says Dr Fernandes. As well as applying topically, it should be taken in supplement form. “

By using a combination of Vitamin A and antioxidants, it’s possible to safely expose skin to the sun for no longer than 20 minutes without sunscreen, in order to synthesize vitamin D, which is vital for healthy skin as well as preventing conditions such as osteoporosis and even cancer.

Safe in the Sunshine – A, B, C

A: Antioxidants are an essential sunscreen ingredient

B: Be vigilant – reapply regularly

C: Choose to include a daily dose of a vitamin A and antioxidant supplement

3 Essential Suncressn Element To Look For:

1. Antioxidants to help minimise UV Ray damage that penetrates sunscreen filters

2. Chemical sunscreens absorb the radiation from UV rays, neutralising their damaging effects.

3. Reflectants such as titanium dioxide (found in some of our jane iredale products) reflect rays and scatter energy causing them to ‘bounce’ off the skin.

How UV Rays Damage Skin

• UV light destroys Langerhans cells which participate in the immune response against cancer.

• Generates free radicals which damage skin cell’s DNA

• Contributes to the breakdown of collagen and elastin

• Damages melanocyte cells

Environ Now Available at Roamer

Environ is now available at Roamer Holistic Health & Beauty, Northern Ireland.

What we do:

Environ creates scientifically researched and developed skin care products that make a real lasting difference to the appearance of the skin so that consumers everywhere can have a beautiful skin for a lifetime.

How we do it:

We combine the best of what science and cutting-edge technology has to offer with sound skin care principles to provide superior scientific-based skin care for everyone.

Dr Des Fernandes designed Environ to help correct the visible effects of the chronic deficiency of vitamin A that everyone suffers from in the exposed areas of their skin. Few people understand that this deficiency leads to the appearance of major skin problems we develop and attribute to aging and sun damage.

The formulae of Environ are entirely based on the need to help replenish all the essential skin nutrients lost by exposure to the sun and environmental factors, and at the same time moisturise the skin’s appearance. Environ skin care products have been formulated to combat and relieve the harmful effects of today’s harsh environmental changes, specifically pollution and ever-increasing doses of radiation from the sun due to the thinning of the protective ozone layer. Added to these are the modern-day effects of social and work stresses and poor diet.

Every day our skin loses vitamins due to exposure to these elements, which exacerbates the visible signs of aging. The only way to effectively help replenish these lost skin vitamins is through topical applications and supplements.

Environ’s unique, beautiful science comprises:

  • A+ Complex
  • Vitamin STEP-UP SYSTEM™
  • Technologically advanced facial treatments (DF Machine)
  • Cool Peel® Technology

Dermalogica Bio Surface Peel

Dermalogica Bio Surface Peel is a new and innovative chemical peel that is a non-surgical solution to reveal newer, fresher skin for the face, neck and hands.

What’s the deal with a peel?

A chemical solution using either Glycolic acid (derived from sugar), Lactic acid (derived from milk) or Salicylic acid (derived by wood bark) is applied to the skin, causing the older damaged layers to blister off. The benefits of chemical peels include the following:

*Lightens dark patches, freckles and age spots

*Reduces fine lines around mouth and eyes

*Treats wrinkles caused by the sun, premature ageing and heredity

*Controls some acne

*Improves appearance of mild scarring

*Improves the look, colour and texture of skin

Immediately after the peel, you should notice a little redness or irritation, this only lasts a short time. Afterwards, you will notice softening of fine lines and wrinkles, and a levelling of acne scars and fading of hyper pigmentation.

What to Expect After a Peel

The response to these treatments can vary depending on the patient’s skin type and depending on how many peels the patient has had. Most will just have some mild redness of their skin right after the peel that will look like they have had mild sunburn and if desired, you are able to put moisturiser conyaing an SPF and makeup directly after the treatment and can go back to work and resume their regular activities. Some times these are called lunch time peels.

Over the next several days, there may be a fine peeling or scaling of the skin, very rarely some crusting or scab formation may form and oftentimes there is actually no visible exfoliation. However, even without visible peeling or irritation most patients will notice that their skin feels softer and smoother and will see fading of areas of discolouration.

You may experience temporary redness, in the form of mild sunburn, which can last for a few hours to a few days, depending on your skin type. Only the lesions treated (not the entire surface area) will darken and crust naturally shedding from the skin after approximately 10 days.

This process is mildly noticeable but won’t dramatically affect your appearance. It is important to protect treated skin from the damaging rays of the sun using a full-spectrum sunblock. SPF50 is highly advised.

Chemical Peels and Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion and chemical peels both do basically the same thing for your skin, and that is to exfoliate the skin. They remove the top layer of dead skin cells to reveal fresher, smoother skin and both stimulate faster cell turnover to keep your skin fresher.

Microdermabrasion is a mechanical means of exfoliation, that is, it uses a scrubbing action to remove the dead skin cells, while the chemical peel penetrates and exfoliates the skin chemically.

Chemical peels (pharmaceutical strength) offer professional results in the area of: diminishing lines, removing imperfections and darkness, decreasing acne, blackheads and oil production, increasing collagen production, smoothing, firming and evening skin tone.

Comparing the two

Chemical peels/Dermabrasion’s are procedures that will abrade or eliminate the superficial layers of skin and thus, will produce a regeneration of the epidermis that will make the skin plumper and less wrinkled. This will also help with dyschromias and little changes in the pigmentation of the skin.

Peel vs Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion and exfoliating retail products offer professional results in the areas of: buffing, polishing, refining, deep cleaning of pores, and reduction of surface imperfections, for example Dermalogica offer a range of products to facilitate this process such as the following;

* Dermalogica Multivitamin Thermafoliant: Is powerful thermal polisher that combines physical and chemical exfoliants to refine skin texture and enhance penetration of ingredients into skin. It is suitable for drier/prematurely-ageing skin.

* Dermalogica Skin prep scrub: This skin polishing scrub with finely-granulated Corn Cob Meal gently removes dulling surface debris, allowing for improved absorption of moisturising treatments. Skin is left with a smooth, healthy-looking finish.

*Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant: Dermalogica’s number one exfoliant and winner of best exfoliator 8th year round!. Gentle, Rice-based exfoliating powder activates upon contact with water, releasing Papain, Salicylic Acid and Rice Enzymes that micro-exfoliate dead cells, instantly leaving skin smoother and brighter.

*Dermalogica Daily Resurfacer: A Daily, leave-on exfoliating treatment that brightens, hydrates, evens skin tone, and delivers dramatic smoothing results. Each precisely-measured, leave-on dose contains one application of alpha and beta hydroxy acids and enzymes to smooth the skin, helping to reduce the signs of premature aging without irritation or redness.

*Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant: Dramatically improve skin texture with this two-in-one masque/exfoliation treatment. Non-abrasive formula contains Lactic Acid and Hydroxy Acid to help detach dead skin cells, increasing cell renewal while improving texture for dramatically smooth skin.

So is there any risk?

Neither has any major risks or side-effects and both have limited effectiveness. They can help diminish or even remove superficial scarring and wrinkles, age spots, stretch marks and uneven skin texture. For deeper skin imperfections, you may need a more invasive procedure. See warning below if using a chemical peel and microdermabrasion together.

Remember if you have a Microdermabrasion treatment using either crystals or diamond head, once that service is finished and you walk out the salon the treatment is done. When you have a peel the process will carry on throughout the day stimulating collagen production. In an overall view a chemical peel will have by far greater results than microdermabrasion treatment.

Microdermabrasion After a Chemical Peel

Microdermabrasion is not recommended if you’ve had chemical peeling (Glycolic acid, salicylic acid, phenol, TCA, Jessner or any other kind of peel or topical vitamin A/retinol) in the last 14 days because the two exfoliating procedures combined are too aggressive and might affect your skin’s ability to recover. This applies to over the counter systems and professional treatments.

Instructions for After a Peel

*Avoid exercise and sweating (sauna) for a few hours after the procedure.

*Avoid the use of abrasive or exfoliating sponges until face returns to normal condition.

*Apply a fragrance free moisturiser twice a day. (We recommend your favourite Dermalogica moisturiser)

*Avoid products containing alpha-hydroxy acids until the skin returns to normal condition.

*Do not peel the skin, pick the skin, scrape or scratch the skin,

* Do not expose the skin to sun or sun lamps, till the skin returns to a normal condition.

*If possible delay the use of make-up for 24 hours, if you must use very lightly.

Skin Care Following Peel

After the treatment, you should avoid rigorous scrubbing of the treated area for several days. Cleanse the treated area gently. Be sure to avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen during the course of your treatment. If you are using Retin-A or other topical medicine creams, wait 2 days to start your routine. This includes any medication for acne, or any of your wrinkle medications including glycolic, lactic and salicylic acid. Always wear and SPF daily, we recommend a SPF50 for maximum solar defense.

Booking & Cancellation Policy

At Roamer Holistic Health & Beauty we pride ourselves on delivering a 5* service and in order to do this we need to operate our business efficiently. As a result of the number of people failing to appear for or cancelling appointments with limited, to no notice, we have been forced to amend our appointment booking policies. Please note that this also applies to multiple treatments booked and then part cancelled or changed in salon. This new policy will take effect from Monday 6th February 2017.

We respectfully request a minimum 24 hours’ notice of cancellation. Failure to do so will result in a 50% charge for treatment booked. If you do not attend a booking, the full amount of the treatment will be charged. Clients who have previously missed 3 or more appointments will be politely asked to pay in full for all future appointments at the time of booking and will be charged in full for future cancellations.

Please note that we reserve the right to deduct TreatCard points for No Show/Cancelled appointments. We also reserve the right to request that the cancellation fee is paid in full prior to any future appointments being made.

Non-Refundable Deposits

In Salon Appointment Booking: To secure an appointment, a non-refundable deposit will be required at the time of booking. The amount will depend on the requested treatment – deposits range from £5.00 to a £50.00. Please note that a 50% deposit is required to secure all bookings of 20minutes or more.

Online Appointment Booking: When booking online a deposit will automatically be taken and 24 hours cancellation notice will be required.  If a cancellation notice is not given a 50% charge will be deducted from the price of your treatment.

We completely understand that things can happen at the last minute and can assure you that we will always be understanding and sympathetic in certain circumstances. We understand that sometimes you may need to change your booking. We kindly request 24 hours’ notice should you wish to cancel an appointment as a courtesy to both our therapists and other clients who are on the cancellation list. Giving notice will help us to re-schedule your treatment to a more convenient time. Failure to give at least 24 hours’ notice will result in forfeiture of your deposit.

Regrettably, we have had to put these measures in place because of the sheer volume of non-arrivals and late cancellations we have had, which can lead to a damaging effect on our business. We respectfully ask you to remember that we are a small independent business with ongoing overheads.
